چکیده

transmission between the immigrant and autochthonous population has been frequently detected (8), likely indicating a fairly high degree of social permeability between the 2 groups. The transmission of Beijing MTB from a person born in another country to a person born in Spain reported here seems to follow this trend and raises concern about a potential spread of Beijing MTB to the autochthonous population. The isolate from the other Spanish patient (patient 6) shared the genotype of the strain described earlier in the spread of Beijing genotype in Gran Canaria (9); a Liberian was the first case-patient. The patient from Spain in our report had been imprisoned on that island before her arrival in Madrid. These data suggest another way Beijing genotype can be imported into Spain, which is different from the South American route. In summary, we describe TB patients with Beijing genotype strains in Madrid among patients from South America. This geographic origin differs from the predominant Asian origin reported for TB cases in other European countries caused by the Beijing genotype. Our findings suggest an alternate route of transmission between South America and Europe for the Beijing genotype. Furthermore, the recent occurrence of this genotype in a TB patient from Spain, who shared an RFLP type with a South American patient, suggests further transmission of these strains into the local community. Longitudinal studies should monitor the potential impact and establishment of these strains after their introduction.

Serologic evidence of human influenza virus infections in swine populations, Cambodia

BACKGROUND This study was conducted from 2006 to 2010 and investigated the seroprevalence of influenza A viruses in Cambodian pigs, including human H1N1, H3N2, 2009 pandemic H1N1 (A(H1N1)pdm09), and highly pathogenic avian H5N1 influenza A viruses. METHODS A total of 1147 sera obtained from pigs in Cambodia were tested by haemagglutination inhibition (HI) assays for antibody to human influenz...

Satellite Tracking on the Flyways of Brown-Headed Gulls and Their Potential Role in the Spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 Virus

Brown-headed gulls (Larus brunnicephalus), winter visitors of Thailand, were tracked by satellite telemetry during 2008-2011 for investigating their roles in the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus spread. Eight gulls negative for influenza virus infection were marked with solar-powered satellite platform transmitters at Bang Poo study site in Samut Prakarn province, Thailand; t...

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus (H5N1) Outbreak in Captive Wild Birds and Cats, Cambodia

From December 2003 through January 2004, the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre, Cambodia, was affected by the highly pathogenic influenza virus (H5N1). Birds from 26 species died. Influenza virus subtype H5N1 was detected in 6 of 7 species tested. Cats from 5 of 7 species were probably infected; none died.

Little Evidence of Subclinical Avian Influenza Virus Infections among Rural Villagers in Cambodia

In 2008, 800 adults living within rural Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia were enrolled in a prospective cohort study of zoonotic influenza transmission. After enrollment, participants were contacted weekly for 24 months to identify acute influenza-like illnesses (ILI). Follow-up sera were collected at 12 and 24 months. A transmission substudy was also conducted among the family contacts of cohor...

Quantitative assessment of a spatial multicriteria model for highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 in Thailand, and application in Cambodia

The Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 (HPAI) virus is now considered endemic in several Asian countries. In Cambodia, the virus has been circulating in the poultry population since 2004, with a dramatic effect on farmers' livelihoods and public health. In Thailand, surveillance and control are still important to prevent any new H5N1 incursion. Risk mapping can contribute effectively to dis...
